Welcome to my site dedicated to Hayley Mills. I thoroughly enjoyed many of her movies when I was MUCH younger (I'm only about three years older than she). But I really heard very little about her after the 1960s. While randomly surfing the Web one night I came across a page that mentioned her. Well, that piqued my curiosity, so I decided to search around and find out what I could about her activities over the past 25 years or so. I couldn't find any one site with detailed information on her life and career, so I decided to bring together what I could find on various sites into one place. What follows is the result of my search thus far.

[What's New]
This site is designed to be viewed with any browser that complies with the HTML 3.2 Reference Specification.

If you're like me, you hate waiting for what seems like an eternity while some graphics-intensive sites load. So, when I have the time to add images (content additions/changes will take priority), most of them will appear as "thumbnails". If you want to see any of these in their full size, just "click" on the one you want like you would if you were selecting a new link. When you're done, select your browser's "back" option to return to where you were.

If you're not using a browser that supports graphics, then selecting the description of the image should allow you to download the full-size version (assuming your browser allows you to download image files).

Personal Information

Her full name is Hayley Catherine Rose Vivien Mills.  She was born at 11:40 p.m. on 18 April 1946 at 27 Welbeck Street in London, England.  She is the daughter of Academy Award-winning actor Sir John Mills and novelist-playwright Mary Hayley Bell.  She has an older sister, Juliet (an actress - here's a fan's web page about her) and a younger brother, Jonathan (a screenwriter and producer).

The movie So Well Remembered, which starred Hayley's father, was being filmed during 1946.  About an hour or so into the film, there are a few seconds of footage showing "Infant Julie".  Immediately following that are a few seconds of footage showing "Babie Julie", who according to the credits was played by Juliet Mills.  But there was nothing in the credits about "Infant Julie".  Having looked at that portion of the film numerous times, I'm convinced that footage of "Infant Hayley" was used to portray "Infant Julie", but that Hayley wasn't listed in the credits because she didn't really act in the film.

Considering that Hayley's parents lived in a house facing the sixth green on Denham golf course at the time, the film was made at Denham Studios, and footage of her sister Juliet was also used to transition the time period from Julie's birth to the time when Patricia Roc appeared in the part of Julie as a young woman, I think it's a pretty good bet.  However, although I've also seen other references that imply that Hayley was an uncredited Infant in the film, I haven't seen any hard evidence, like references in either of her parents' autobiographies, production notes from the film, etc.  If anyone comes across real documentation, I'd like to know about it.

[John, Mary and
Hayley] In any event, the family subsequently moved from Denham and Hayley spent her childhood living with her parents on a 400 acre dairy farm in Sussex, England, "reading comic books on the back of a milking cow."  In 1955, at the age of 9 years, 2 months, she was enrolled at the Elmhurst School, Camberley.

[Hayley's first
image in Tiger Bay (.jpg image)] She made her acting debut in 1959, at age 13 (she was actually 12 when the film was being shot), playing a supporting role in the film Tiger Bay, with her father playing the lead. How did she get that part? According to an article in the August, 1997 edition of Andy Warhol's Interview Magazine:

"J. Lee Thompson, who was going to direct the movie with Horst Buchholz, a very good-looking German film star, came down to our farm in the Sussex countryside to talk to my father about him playing the detective inspector. As you know, the film's about the relationship between a Polish sailor [Buchholz] who kills his girlfriend and abducts the child who witnesses the murder through a letterbox. When J. Lee Thompson saw me on the farm, he decided the child didn't have to be a boy, as they'd thought; perhaps it could be a girl. I did a screen test, and that was it."

Her portrayal of a frightened little witness in that film won her an acting award at the Berlin Film Festival. Walt Disney's wife, Lillian, saw the film in London and convinced her husband to fly over and interview Hayley. That ultimately led to her being signed to a five-year contract with Walt Disney.

And so, in the early 1960s, she emerged as a captivating child star who endeared herself to movie audiences in such films as Pollyanna, Whistle Down the Wind, In Search of the Castaways, Summer Magic and The Moon-Spinners, among others. Her flaxen hair, big, round eyes, button nose, and broad English accent made her a miniature superstar.

She didn't date much, but her mother apparently arranged to have Beatle George Harrison selected as Hayley's escort to a midnight charity performance of the Audrey Hepburn film "Charade" at the Regal Cinema in Henley-On-Thames on March 20, 1964, less than a month before her 16th birthday.

[vidcap from 'The
Trouble With Angels' (.jpg image)] Then, in 1966, she drank, smoked (The Trouble With Angels), swore and played a nude (back view only) scene in the British Comedy The Family Way, which forever shattered her "innocent child" image. During the filming she became involved in a well-publicized love affair with producer-director Roy Boulting, who was more than 32 years older than she (he was born on 21 November 1913 in Bray, Berkshire, England). The age difference between them apparently never bothered her: "You are either old souls who connect and share the same interest ... or you are not." Read Rex Reed's 1967 interview with them. They were married in 1971 after completion of Twisted Nerve, which Roy co-wrote and directed. She then effectively dropped from sight on American movie screens. [vidcap from 'The Family Way' (.jpg

[Roy Boulting and
Hayley Mills]

[Hayley and
Crispian] She has one son from that marriage, Crispian (Dodge to his friends) Mills, who was born on 18 Jan 1973 in Hammersmith, West London and became the lead singer of the group Kula Shaker, which was signed with Sony.  Their second single went straight to number 2 in the UK charts.  A subsequent album, K, spent 2 weeks at the number 1 spot in England.  They were also named Best New Artist at the February, 1997 Brit Awards (England's equivalent of the Grammys).  Hayley and Roy separated in 1975 and were divorced in 1977.  Roy died on 5 November 2001, at the age of 87, in Eynsham, Oxfordshire, England after a long battle with cancer.

[Hayley, Jason and Leigh Lawson] Hayley met actor Leigh Lawson in May, 1975, when they were both starring in a West End comedy production: A Touch of Spring. Their relationship resulted in a son during the summer of 1976, Jason (Ace) Lawson, who in early 1998 was a student at Bretton Hall College in England studying drama. She called the split from Lawson in the early '80s "devastating".

[Marcus and
Hayley] Sometime in late-1996(?) she ended a longtime relationship with Marcus Maclaine, a 34-year-old rock musician who is also her brother-in-law (his brother, Maxwell Caulfield, is her sister Juliet's husband). They collaborated on a book in 1988.

In early 2000, Hayley was trying out the Big Apple for the first time, settling there with actor Firdous Bamji with whom she fell in love while touring in the stage musical The King and I (he played The Interpreter, was part of the Ensemble and an understudy for The Kralahome).  She starred in Noel Coward's Suite in 2 Keys at the Lucille Lortel Theatre during its very brief run.  Her son Jason is now a student at the London Academy of Music and Drama.

Crispian left Kula Shaker in September, 1999 to work on a new musical project.  This resulted in a new band called The Jeevas in 2002.

In their August, 1963 issue, Photoplay magazine published an article entitled Love is Just Around the Corner: "On her seventeenth birthday, Hayley Mills gives her first grown-up interview on love, men and marriage!"

The Day Hayley Got In A Hearse is an article from the August, 1964 issue of Photoplay magazine about Hayley's "very first grown-up, screen kiss" in the film "The Moon-Spinners."

There was an article by her sister Juliet in the July, 1965 issue of Motion Picture magazine. She discussed Hayley, their relationship and some aspects of their family life.

The April 14, 1975 issue of People magazine had an article entitled "Hayley Mills, 28, and Roy Boulting, 61: Pollyanna Never Had It So Happy".

There was also an article about Hayley in the May 12, 1997 issue of USA Today.

What does she like to read? According to Who Reads What? 1994:

"The Magic Findhorn by Paul Hawken is one of the most exciting books I've read for a long time. Anyone who wants to know what the New Age really means should read it. At a time when the world appears to be hurtling towards disaster there comes the miracle that is happening in Findhorn. It is a fantastic and true story about the birth of the New Age and a Spiritual Community."
