I've been told that sometime in 1967 Hayley and her parents were guests on the Merv Griffin Show. They sang several old popular music hall songs and reminisced about the British theater with Griffin and Arthur Treacher.

Take a look at one review of her 1961 film The Parent Trap by June Parker Beck and another from A CyberMom Video Review.

Did Hayley have a "double" in The Parent Trap? An article in the July 26, 1998 edition of the New York Times says she did. Further, it states that her double's name was Susan Henning. But the reporter doesn't give the source of his information.

The movie The Parent Trap was based on the book Das Doppelte Lottchen by Frich Kästner. It was also published in the U.S. under the title Lisa and Lottie.

According to Paul Calter, many of the scenes in her 1961 film Whistle Down the Wind were shot near Bacup, Rossendale, UK.

[front of paperback book jacket (.gif image)] There was also a new paperback edition published in the US in February, 1997, titled Whistle Down the Wind: A Modern Fable: Hyperion; $12.95; ISBN 0-786-88259-X.

Some of the scenes from her 1964 film The Moon-Spinners were shot in the hillside village of Houmeriakos, Perfecture of Lasithi, Crete.

The following comes from a short 'Then and Now' piece produced by Disney around the time of the filming of The Parent Trap II in 1986. Hayley was asked what she had been doing in the 25 years since the making of the original Parent Trap movie:

"I've muddled through and done my own thing and tried to lead my life," she said. "I'm not driven by ambition; never thought my career was the most important element of my life. I suppose I was overly involved in my career for my first 15 years, but my attitude changed.

"For five years I did the PBS miniseries The Flame Trees of Thika in Kenya but not much else, apart from the theater in London's West End. Some of the plays I did were American: Toys in the Attic and Dial M for Murder, for example.

"The theater suited my family life but wasn't so rewarding financially," she continued. "I didn't earn a great deal of money, but enough to carry on my life and to live at home while my sons were growing up. My income was sufficient to send them to good schools."

Hayley is the most requested performer in the Disney film library. Occasionally, she sees her old Disney films on television and watches them dispassionately.

"She was an amusing child," Hayley said, laughing softly, "but she wasn't very pretty. The last time I saw myself was in The Moonspinners. I was 16 when I did that picture. And it's curious to see your childhood so clearly presented to you again.

"My favorite pictures were: Pollyanna, The Parent Trap and That Darned Cat. I was a little plump in those days and self-conscious about it."

But during the making of the sequel, Hayley was slender, self-confident, and reflective about her brief career as a child star. She didn't believe peaking in her teens was necessarily bad, but early success did hamper her adult career. "Being a child star helped me get good parts in the theater," she said, "but it was also a hindrance, because I had so little experience on stage as a youngster. Film acting is a very different business.

"And once I'd become an adult, filmmakers didn't want to cast me in older, serious roles because I had established an image for family films as a squeaky-clean kid. They doubted my ability to play anything else. All the same, I think I've done about 25 films altogether, a good many of them as an adult.

"The English press was generous to me at the beginning but became increasingly less so. In the theater I still feel I have to prove myself as something more than just a personality. When I get good notices, it is a real achievement.

"I had such a happy experience in Parent Trap II that I would love to come back to Hollywood and do more work here, although all of the film was made on locations in Florida.

"It's a pity they didn't decide to make this film many years ago. I'd have had to spend less time in the makeup chair."

[cover page (.jpg image)] In addition to the movie That Darn Cat, there was an 8-1/2 x 11 soft-cover book published by Golden Press (7602, New York, ©1965 Walt Disney Productions, 69¢). It was 48 pages long and illustrated with 73 photographs (47 color, 26 black-and-white) from the motion picture. [movie cast page (.jpg image)]

It was 111 pages long and illustrated with 18 black-and-white photographs from the movie. back cover (.jpg image)

[front of book jacket (.jpg image)] Him, Her & Me, The Autobiography of Mr. Chips, A Yorkshire Terrier, by Mary Hayley Bell; Weidenfeld and Nicolson, London; 1981; 5.75" x 8.75".  Description from the dust jacket inside front flap: In these funny and often touching 'memoirs' Mr. Chips, a Yorkshire terrier of great character, describes his eventful life with actor Sir John Mills (Him) and his wife Mary Hayley Bell (Her).  Mr. Chips recalls his early days and how it was that he came to share his home with the celebrated Mills family - including Juliet, Hayley and Jonathan, and their children - whose talents and foibles he candidly reveals.  His amazing conversations and adventures while out shopping, at the golf course, on a film location, staying with a duchess and some gypsies, and particularly when he is kidnapped all make captivating reading.  Mr. Chips' unique story, which is so beautifully illustrated by Molly Blake, will charm readers of every age.  Mary Hayley Bell was born in Shanghai and spent most of her early youth in China.  She was on the stage for some years, but when she married actor and producer John Mills she gave up her career and since then has devoted her time to raising a family of two daughters, Juliet and Hayley, and a son, Jonathan.  Besides five stage plays produced in the West End of London, she has written her autobiography and three novels, one of which, Whistle Down The Wind, was made into a successful film with her daughter Hayley in the leading role.  Her books to date are Avolena, Whistle Down the Wind, Far Morning and What Shall We Do Tomorrow? (autobiography), and her plays are Men in Shadow, Duet For Two Hands, The Uninvited Guest, Angel, Foreign Field and Hermit Crabs (television).

Hayley wrote an introduction for the 1986 Unicorn Publishing House edition of Heidi: story by Johanna Spyri; illustrations by Donna Pacinelli; ISBN 0-88101-059-6. Also for the 1988 Little Unicorn edition: ISBN 0-88101-079-0; $5.95.

[front of book jacket (.jpg image)] On September 7, 2021, Hayley's book Forever Young: A Memoir was published in the US (Hardcover; 384 pages; Grand Central Publishing; ISBN: 1538704196; List Price: $30.00).
Now, in her charming and forthright memoir, she provides a unique window into when Hollywood was still 'Tinseltown' and the great Walt Disney was at his zenith, ruling over what was (at least in his own head) still a family business. This behind-the-scenes look at the drama of having a sky-rocketing career as a young teen in an esteemed acting family will offer both her childhood impressions of the wild and glamorous world she was swept into, and the wisdom and broader knowledge that time has given her. Hayley will delve intimately into her relationship with Walt Disney, as well as the emotional challenges of being bound to a wholesome, youthful public image as she grew into her later teen years, and how that impacted her and her choices--including marrying a producer over 30 years her senior when she was 20! With her regrets, her joys, her difficulties, and her triumphs, this is a compelling read for any fan of classic Disney films and an inside look at a piece of real Hollywood history.
