This is a lavish production, sets and costumes lush and beautiful. So is the Rodgers and Hammerstein score, sung by the young lovers.
Vee Talmadge, as the King, comes out from under Yul Brynner's shadow and makes the role his own.
Hayley Mills, on the other hand, seems a little colorless at first. It takes her a little while to warm up. We like her well enough, it's just her voice I'm not crazy about. She's much better dancing in the show's signature scene. That moment really still does give me goosebumps.
Hayley Mills really is not a singer and it shows. "The King and I" will
be at the Wang through October 12.
